God's Promises Sunday

The Importance Of Holy Communion

Luke 22: 19:20, And He took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying this is My body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me. And likewise the cup after they had eaten saying, this cup that is poured out for you is the New Covenant in My blood.

This was in fact the First Holy Communion. He told the apostles that they should continue this celebration of who He is long after He was no longer with them. It is something that still goes on with believers.

At first it was bread and wine. For whatever reason some changes were made until we end up with the small wafer and grape juice that we have today. As long as the reverence for what it represents is present, it makes no difference.

It was believed by many people that the Bread and Wine were the actual body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Himself proclaimed that they would be a reminder of Him and what He said.

1  Corinthians 10: 16, The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?

1 Corinthians 11: 26,  for as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.

At first  in the church, only anointed people could handle the bread and wine.  The fact is, the Lord Jesus pronounced the words and each Apostle took what we call communion. Many churches today take communion once a month. A much smaller amount take it once a week.

John 6: 51 and 53: I am the living bread that came down from Heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is My flesh. So Jesus said to them, truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the Flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.

When you put everything together there seems to be a very big problem. How do you follow what the Lord Jesus instructed if you receive communion once a month  or once a week?

When you realize that Holy Communion has important benefits for you, you will want it every day.

  • Helps you remember Christ
  •  helps you examine yourself
  •  leads to eternal life
  •  reminds us of Christ's love for us
  •  helps us get closer to God
  •  eligible for healing of mind, body, and spirit
  •  reminds us of forgiveness

Now we put it all together. First a warning. We must receive with a clean heart and be a believer.

1 Corinthians 11: 27, Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.

Even in the Catholic Church the people are handed the sacred host if they desire it. Many Christians all denominations, as well as evangelicals, receive Holy Communion every day by themselves. It is just as legitimate as the original Apostles. You are following what the Bible tells us. It brings the love and sacrifice that brought us forgiveness and salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ when He paid for our sins on the cross.

Colossians 2: 8,  see to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

God bless you and your family.

Remember Jesus loves you.

Prayer of Salvation.

Lord Jesus Christ, I am a sinner. I know you suffered and died on the cross and rose again in order to wash away my sins, and to save me. I acknowledge my sins and I Repent of those sins, and I ask you to come into my heart as my personal savior. I believe and I receive the gift of Salvation. Thank you, Lord Jesus. Amen. Praise The Lord!
