It Is Written, Matthew 5:3, blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.
At first glance, these two verses may seem different. But are they? Both refer to people who are spiritually lost. At the time Jesus was teaching the people about God, the only real teaching about God was from Jesus, not in the synagogue. Religion as they knew it was just rules and regulations that were impossible to do. They were ready to hear what Jesus was teaching.
When you look at people in the physical world, you see people that depend on God for a living, such as farmers. The weather and how their crops grow are a result of God's actions, and they know it.
In many places on earth, people have nothing. Their lives seem without hope. When given the opportunity to hear about God, they endure hardships to hear the Word, that most people in the industrialized world would not even dream of doing. They realize God is their only hope, and many cling to him.
The sad part is with most people, the better off they are, the less they depend on God. They feel that they accomplished everything by themselves and don't need God. They don't even want to hear about God.
There you have it. Two ways to look at those verses. Nothing has changed from that time until now, because people and circumstances have not changed for the most part. Have a blessed day. Praise The Lord!
